Tickets for the May 9th performance of Joe Gulla's "GARBO" at the Cherry Lane Theatre are on sale now. "GARBO" is a 2017 Downtown Urban Arts Festival (DUAF) selection.
Written by Joe Gulla and directed by Brian Rardin, "GARBO" had an invitation-only, staged reading at The Dramatists Guild in New York City this past October.
Gulla says: "The reading was quite the success. We were thrilled to present 'GARBO' for the first time as a full-length play. In its earlier incarnation, 'GARBO' was an extended One Act. More interesting is the fact that Act One is actually a true story: a situation I found myself in when I lived in Rome, Italy.
"Act Two is set in New York. It's a fiction that takes my original story into a completely different direction. I like to think that this new version of 'GARBO,' complete with its juxtaposition of fiction and non-fiction, deepens the play's impact and message."
Per press notes: "'GARBO' tells the story of Joe, a gay New Yorker, who happens upon the tiny, hidden, candle-lit Garbo Bar during his visit to Rome, Italy. An emotional adventure begins when he is introduced to the handsome, enigmatic, (possibly!) closeted bartender/owner. Funny and heartfelt, Garbo explores why life and love may be better lived outside the closet... even (or especially) in the shadow of the Vatican!"
Joe Gulla wrote and performed "The Bronx Queen," which sold out Joe's Pub at The Public Theater this past August and November. "The Bronx Queen" also won the "Audience Award" for its performance at the 2016 Downtown Urban Arts Festival.
Up next for Joe Gulla? He'll reteam with long-time collaborator, Brian Rardin on "GAY.PORN.MAFIA". "Brian and I are incredibly excited about "GAY.PORN.MAFIA". It's a collection of my short comedies: "Gayfever", "Fall and Rise", "REEL WOOD", "Knock Off!" and "Sleeping With The Fish". All of these plays have been produced in various theaters across the country. We are thrilled to marshal them all under one roof. Look for "GAY.PORN.MAFIA" later in 2017!"
