Marymount Manhattan College's Theresa Lang Theatre was first dedicated as the Marymount Manhattan Theatre on February 19, 1975. The first Off Broadway theatre to be built on Manhattan's Upper East Side in fifty years, the 250 seat proscenium theatre continues to serve as an urban showcase for professional theatre, dance and music productions. Since that time students have performed in a variety of mainstage theatre and dance productions which are fully produced with sets, lighting, and costumes. During the late 1970s and early 1980s professional theatre, dance and opera companies regularly performed at the MMT, including a residency by the Phoenix Theatre which presented premieres of new American and European plays. On January 20, 2001, in tandem with the Marymount Manhattan Theatre's 25th Anniversary Celebration, the theatre was rededicated as the Theresa Lang Theatre 'in honor of its alumna, trustee, and benefactor, Theresa Lang '97.
