John Putch's theatre story, which had its world premiere Friday at the Stony Brook Film Festival, was awarded a special jury prize for 'Spirit of Independent Filmmaking.'

The award is the first honor for the film and marks the 4th time one of Putch's films has screened at the prestigious Long Island Festival. One of Putch's previous efforts (Mojave Phone Booth) snagged Best Feature in 2006.

The story of the film revolves around Byron Temple, a retired character actor (Wil Love) with diagnosed dementia, who longs to perform at his beloved summer theater one last time. Against his daughter's wishes (Dendrie Taylor), he accepts a role from the newly installed artistic director (David Deluise) who is unaware of Byron's condition.

THE FATHER AND THE BEAR will be screened at film festivals this fall preceding a small theatrical release next spring.
