The Finest (www.thefinest.com), a sophisticated online Marketplace for fine art, antiques and collectibles, experienced record-setting results as Guernsey's Auction's (www.guernseys.com) Harrisburg Auction crossed the block live, online during a historic six-day sale. The Harrisburg auction included approximately 10,000 antiques, rare artifacts and items relating to the Old West, and was held to raise money for the financially strapped city of Harrisburg, Pa.

Online bidders from across the globe logged on to The Finest, powered by Proxibid, to participate in this massive auction. With more than 8,500 participants and nearly 550,000 catalog views, more than 41 percent of all auction inventory was sold to online bidders via The Finest. The Harrisburg Auction was ultimately record-setting for both Guernsey's and The Finest.

"We are very pleased with the online results achieved in partnership with The Finest," said Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey's Auction. "We had record-breaking attendance online, with a significant portion of the auction selling to online bidders. The Finest ensured buyers from across the globe could participate in the sale, and provided a colorful and exciting experience for both onsite and online buyers alike."

Online buyers caused a bidding frenzy when the following high-profile items crossed the auction block:

  • Lot 6392: Doc Holliday's Frock Coat - sold online for $55,000
  • Lot 5544: Doc Holliday Pistol in Case - sold online for $50,000
  • Lot 1318: Doc Holliday Dental Chair - sold online for $40,000
  • Lot 5411 - Allan Pinkerton's Detective Badge - sold online for $37,500
  • Lot 6620: W.H. Bonney Billy the Kid signed letter - sold online for $32,500

"There is, for, me, a brief but intriguing time in the American experience that spawned the gunslingers and blood letters of the "Wild West. Not the least of which was the "dentist" John H. "Doc" Holliday. This awkward economy for many communities opened a window in which they would sell many of their assets to pay bills. In my view, an opportunity to come once in a hundred years," said Richie Thomas, the online winning bidder of the Doc Holliday dental chair.
