The World Music Institute concludes the 2014-15 edition of its intimate Global Salon series with Nordic Fiddlers Bloc tonight, April 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Thalia Theater at Symphony Space.

Norway, Sweden and the Shetland Islands have some of the richest fiddling traditions in the world. Representing them in this program, respectively, are Olav Luksengård Mjelva, Anders Hall and Kevin Henderson. They play traditional tunes and original compositions, and with strength, humor and plenty of banter, illustrate the distinct sounds of and cultural ties among the people of the North Atlantic rim.

GLOBAL SALON

The informal and intimate Global Salon series-which takes place at the 168-seat Leonard Nemoy Thalia theater on the Upper West Side-presents an enticing format for delving into esoteric and ancient traditional music, the kind that won't be found in the mainstream. Now in its third year, the series continues to feature brilliant artists who not only perform, but also share with the audience cultural history and personal stories. Global Salon offers outstanding performances combined with a rare glimpse into the work and minds of modern practitioners of authentic traditional art forms.

The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is comprised of Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway), Anders Hall (Sweden) and Kevin Henderson (Shetland).

Olav is an award-winning musician who is also a member of the acclaimed band SVER and widely recognised as one of Norway's finest fiddle players; Anders, also a member of SVER, is continually cited as one of Sweden's leading fiddle players across a broad range of styles; and Kevin, one of Shetlands finest fiddle players, is a member of such bands as Boys of the Lough, Fiddlers' Bid and Session A9.

Individually they are regarded as three of the finest young fiddle players currently working in the international folk music scene, while collectively they are now finding themselves increasingly in demand across the world due to their unique collaboration, onstage sense of humor and inter-band 'banter.'

Norway, Sweden and Shetland have three of the richest fiddle traditions in the world, with documented historical links going back hundreds of years. 'Nordic Fiddlers Bloc' seek to bring those historical links and traditions alive and present them in an exciting new fashion, while also remaining faithful to the roots of each tradition.

While blending the individual styles together, they allow each distinctive flavor to unfold into a combined sound that's unique, meaningful, intense and invigorating.

Their eponymously titled debut CD received rave national and international reviews on release, with their second album now due in autumn 2015.
