Check out some family entertainment aboard the historic Waterfront Museum & Showboat Barge with "The Showboat CIRCUS," with two shows one day only on July 1 at 1 and 4 p.m. in Tribeca at Hudson River Park Pier 25. The show is part of the North River Historic Ship Festival.
"The Showboat CIRCUS” is a unique performance bringing together three seasoned performers that have worked the boards for many, many years. These acts of sheer whimsy all feature performers that have been in the biz for over 25 years. Also featured is a young emerging artist. Hosted by Captain David Sharps aboard his beautifully restored Lehigh Valley No. 79, the series offers a glimpse into what an authentic NY Harbor showboat would have displayed in NY harbor waters dating back to the late 1800’s. Come enjoy waterfront breezes and views, see antique vessels docked at Tribeca’s new historic ship pier, marvel at the George Rhoades Ball Machine and an original art exhibition “Life on the Water” – Oil Paintings by Odd Andersen hanging on the barge’s walls.
CIRCUSundays on the Showboat features:
Hilary Chaplain - award winning physical comedienne.
Will Shaw - juggler extraordinaire featured on David Letterman and Jon Stewart for his juggling and humor steeped in the traditions of the great comedians of the silent film era.
Sophie Sharps - the captain's daughter on trapeze
Showboat Captain David Sharps – Serious Foolishness & Chinese Vase Manipulation
THE SHOWBOAT CIRCUS is part of the North River Historic Ship Festival June 28 - July 1. The second annual ship festival features free public boat rides aboard the Tug Pegasus and the John J. Harvey Fireboat, and dockside tours of the LILAC Steam Tender and Lehigh Valley No. 79.
The Waterfront Museum is housed aboard the only surviving wooden example of “The Lighterage Era” (1860 –1960) -- an era in transportation and commerce history when goods were transported by Tug & Barge across the NY Harbor. The Lehigh Valley No. 79 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Free open boat tours are year-round Saturdays 1 – 5 pm & Thursdays 4 – 8 pm when docked at Red Hook Homeport Pier 44.
