The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit (WSOAE) returns for the 88th consecutive year with its annual Spring Show beginning Memorial Day weekend, May 26, 27 and 28, and continuing the following weekend, June 2 and 3. This highly popular free event will feature a huge roster of nearly 100 new and veteran artists in all mediums showing and selling their works directly to the public.
With a history that can trace its origins back to artists and friends Willem De Kooning and Jackson Pollack who first brought some of their paintings to the sidewalks around the park to raise some much-needed extra funds, this event has long been one of New York City's most beloved outdoor events. Every year, thousands of art lovers are drawn to this juried show to see works from many notable artists such as Yomiko Kuga (hand molded ceramic pottery), Joan Miclin (exquisite gold jewelry) and 20 year show veteran Giovanni Scalisi (hand molded art panels) among others. All registered artists are eligible in several award categories by medium and "Best In Show."
From painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry, glass, woodworking, ceramics, fiber and mixed media, works in all these mediums will be on display and on sale directly from the artists themselves. This wonderful event brings together the New York City art community as well as a diverse group of attendees including art lovers, tourists, faculty, students and anyone with an appreciation of art. With such diverse fine art on offer, there's literally something for everyone at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit!
The show takes place on the sidewalks at University Place between East 12th St. and Waverly Place and the corner of Washington Square Park. This twice a year (Spring and Fall) New York City institution is free to the public with viewing and selling hours from noon to 6 pm each day.
