The Vanessa Long Dance Company will be premiering their latest piece "Adam's Ale" at Dixon Place's 8 In A Show March 28th. The Vanessa Long Dance Company combines theatre and dance to create work about social and political issues we face in everyday life. The hope is that through their work they can encourage conversations about the issues everyone faces, challenge the status quo, and change the world.
"Adams Ale" focuses on growing issue of water overuse and waste. Throughout the piece they utilize four dancers who move with vulture like qualities around the stage littered with solo cups and plastic bottles filled with water. These four dancers move around the stage constantly seeking and fighting over the water resources until the water is no more. They use a strong sense of rhythm and intangible footwork. Their bodies shift as instruments to signify the cleansing and catching of their last cup of drinking water before going into dismay, to exemplify this dreadful water epidemic.
The creation of this piece was inspired to explore the controversial issue of blue gold -the scarcity and inadequate supplies of clean water. Drought and the effects of climate change also make the lack of access to clean water a major concern. Almost a ¼ of the world's population cannot rely on a safe supply of drinking water. Through this piece the Vanessa Long Dance Company hopes that they can make their audiences more aware of their effect on the planet and on the lives of others.
