Now entering its third full year, Uncharted at Greenwich House Music School has emerged as one of New York's most exciting and unpredictable live music series, drawing attention from tastemakers and curators from across the city. Every Uncharted performance features New York City artists premiering new projects or meeting with new collaborators for the first time on stage. Past featured performers include a collaboration between Marc Ribot and Emeline Michel, Sony Masterworks recording artist Bria Skonberg, ShaRon Jones and The Dap-Kings guitarist Binky Griptite, acclaimed harpist Brandee Younger, vocalist Deva Mahal, jazz trumpeter Steven Bernstein, Broadway's Grace McLean (The Great Comet), avant-garde theater artists Erin Markey and Emily Bate and many more.
The 2017 Uncharted season promises a continuation of eclectic excellence in a broad selection of genres representing the melting pot of New York City, including Mexican folkloric, ragtime, classical, modern and traditional jazz, ancient Moroccan devotional and contemporary R&B.
Performances for Uncharted take place every Thursday from March 23 to May 11 with performances beginning at 8:00 pm. Most performances are $15 for advance tickets. Complimentary drinks will be served prior to and during all concerts.
"This year's programming is a response to the divisive nature of the recent election and is meant to counteract misogyny, xenophobia, racism, and prejudice with art that amplifies the voices of women, immigrants, minorities, and LGBTQ communities," explains series curator Jennie Wasserman, formerly of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe's Pub, Carnegie Hall, and SFJAZZ. "While booking Uncharted, I meditated on the idea of New York City as America's sanctuary city and of Greenwich House as an artistic and cultural sanctuary within the historically diverse West Village. My goal was to create a haven for artist and audiences alike, a space where we could all put aside our separate preconceptions and embrace each other's cultures and art without prejudice."
Rachel Black, Director of Greenwich House Music School, adds, "Our music students, both young and old, come to practice their craft in an open, nonjudgmental environment. The Uncharted series acts as an extension of that 'safe space' mentality, providing established artists with room to work out raw artistry, experiment with new artistic styles or cement new collaborations. The Greenwich Village community is one of America's oldest and most variegated neighborhoods; we're proud to reflect this artistic diversity and strength within Uncharted's programming."
Greenwich House Music School's roots in New York City extend to the beginning of the 20th century, a time when the neighborhood and the needs of its populace were growing at an exponential pace. Greenwich House opened its doors on Thanksgiving Day in 1902 and has been dedicated to the social and artistic well-being of the downtown area ever since. The organization maintains four senior centers, a pottery school and exhibition gallery, mental health centers for youth and seniors, the first addiction counseling treatment center licensed in New York State, a nursery school, after-school programs and a summer arts camp. The Music School at 46 Barrow Street, originally founded in 1905, has provided countless New Yorkers with their first experiences as performers and creators and offers over $50,000 in arts education scholarships every year.
Uncharted concerts are staged at Greenwich House Music School's Renee Weiler Concert Hall, an intimate 100-capacity room featuring excellent acoustics, a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere and a pair of Steinway grand pianos. Concerts are general admission, and seating is first-come, first-served.
