THE STORY OF MY LIFE, starring Will Chase and Tony Award nominee Malcolm Gets just celebrated opening night at the Booth Theatre on Thursday February 19th, but confirming what BroadwayWorld.com's Rialto Chatter posted Friday evening, the show will play its final performance this Sunday, February 22nd.
A spate of fairly negative reviews and the current skittish economic climate in general seems to have made the hoped for success of THE STORY OF MY LIFE, the first new musical of the Broadway season, destined for an unhappy ending.
Press notes describe the new musical as "the story of two childhood friends and how that friendship profoundly defined their lives. Thomas Weaver is a best selling, award-winning author. Alvin Kelby was his best friend for thirty years. But time can test the bonds of friendship - and when it does, Thomas calls on the only resource he has - his stories of Alvin - to learn where things went wrong".
The two leading men where emotional and inspired about the show shortly before opening night, giving the musical high marks in regarding to performing the bittersweet story of friendship and loss.
"We live in a time when people need something that is fun and authentic," commented Malcolm Gets before opening night. "That is exactly what this musical is. It's a universal story about friendship. It's about the important things in our lives - relationships with people. This musical does not have a high-tech set. Instead it relies on two actors, great music and one hell of a show."
"This is a play about family relationships, true friendship and reconnecting with the simplest and purest qualities in our lives," added Will Chase. "Doing this production has really affected my life. It's the first time in my career that I have done a production that inspires me to call my friends and family after the curtain call."
Tony Award winner and Broadway veteran Richard Maltby, Jr. (Ain't Misbehavin', Song & Dance) directs THE STORY OF MY LIFE. The musical is written by Broadway newcomers Neil Bartram (score) and Brian Hill (book).
Presented by Chase Mishkin, Jack M. Dalgleish, Bud Martin and Carole L. Haber in association with Chunsoo Shin, THE STORY OF MY LIFE features a scenic design by Robert Brill costume design by Wade Laboissonniere; lighting design by Tony Award winner Ken Billington; sound design by Peter Fitzgerald and Carl Casella and orchestrations by Tony, Emmy, Grammy and Academy Award winner Jonathan Tunick."
THE STORY OF MY LIFE began performances on Broadway at The Booth Theatre (222 West 45th Street, between Broadway & 8th Aves.) on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009.
