The Slipper Room, the celebrated variety theatre in Manhattan's Lower East Side, has announced the line-up for their Fall season through the New Year, presenting a full calendar of regular weekly in-house productions in addition to guest shows, concerts and one-nighters.
The in-house variety shows continue to run Wednesday through Sunday nights with Mr. Choade's Upstairs Downstairs - the venue's signature variety show and the longest-running show of its kind in New York City - setting the standard every Saturday night. All in-house variety shows feature a rotating line-up of artists performing comedy, burlesque, circus and sideshow and run well into the small hours, hosted by the likes of Matt Roper, Julie Atlas Muz, Bradford Scobie, Matthew Holtzclaw, Jenny Lee Mitchell and James Habacker himself - all under the guise of various characters.
The first Monday of each month is earmarked for The Attack of the Slipper Room Movie Mondays! - an eclectic presentation of independent films by NYC filmmakers. Tuesday nights weekly are dedicated to stand-up comedy, with two mixed bill shows running concurrently: Seth Herzog's Sweet fills the early house, with Peter Smith and Sandi Honig's Pig taking the late-night slot. The first Thursday of each month is handed over to Boy's Night: An All-Male Cirquelesque Revue.
Monthly out-of-house guest presentations include the award-winning Fireside Mystery Theatre, The Corn Mo and the Love Show Show, The Bongo Hour, the Musical Mondays celebration of musical theater, Hotsy Totsy burlesque and Deep Night with Dale Seever performed by comedian James Bewley.
The Slipper Room Halloween Ball and New Year's Eve Lovefest - both staples of the venue's annual calendar - will go on sale soon.
The concept of performer, filmmaker and downtown impresario James Habacker, the Slipper Room first opened in 1999 when the neo-burlesque scene was still in its infancy, becoming the first venue specifically dedicated to showcasing the work of a new performance collective, designed and curated to nurture emerging talent without fear of censorship. Lady Gaga, Leonard Cohen, The Scissor Sisters, U2 and Joan Rivers number among the artists who have guested over the years.
