The Shelter (winners of Best Overall Play at FringeNYC 2015 with Night of the Living) will present the World Premiere of THE RED ROOM, a new American drama by Morgan McGuire. Directed by Jenny Beth Snyder, previews begin July 14 at TBG Theatre. Opening night is slated for Sunday, July 17.
In THE RED ROOM, the Hodges have gathered at a family house in the northern reaches of California. As the sentencing of their son and brother's murderer nears, questions of justice and forgiveness arise and the family seeks to sift through what has been lost. As they pull at the threads of these questions, new truths begin to unravel.
THE RED ROOM stars Meghan E. Jones, Jessica O'Hara-Baker, John DiMino, Thomas F. Walsh, Sheila Stasack, Michael Kingsbaker, Chris Michael Burke, and Shakhura Orisa Henderson-Amare. The production team features Chris Bowser (sets), Joe Cantalupo (lighting), Aidan Meyer (sound), Heather McDevitt Barton (costumes), Jenny Waxman (production manager) and Kristy Bodall (stage manager).
Morgan McGuire, originally from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is a Brooklyn based actress and playwright. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Marymount Manhattan College, where she graduated with honors. Recent acting credits include Trapper, Cul-de-Sac, Coriolanus, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Recent writing includes Sextet (National Black Theatre KSA series) and Triptych (The Shelter). In addition to theatrical endeavors Morgan is an avid activist.
Jenny Beth Snyder is a Tennessee born, NYC based theater director and co-founder of theater company Fresh Ground Pepper. Her Collaboration with True False Theatre on an adaptation of Slaughterhouse Five was a hit at 2013 Fringe Festival and went on to the Encore Series. She directed new play Man and Coconut written by Jessica Hernandez in a residency with IRT. Through a collaboration with Exquisite Corpse Theater Company she directed new play Anon written by Matthew Minnincino at HERE. Other past directing credits include, Morgan McGuire's Triptych (The Shelter), Callan Stout's America, In Camera! (Fresh Ground Pepper), The Michael Show by Amy Virginia Buchannon (Fresh Ground Pepper) and Ideal by Ayn Rand at 59 E 59th America's Off-Broadway Festival. Jenny Beth holds a BFA from NYU Tisch School of the arts and was a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Director's Lab in 2013.
The Shelter is a family of artists creating original theatre for the New York stage. The core of this community is the company's weekly Shelter Sunday workshop- the creative home to some of theatre's most exciting writers, directors, and actors. Shelter Sunday is a vibrant and galvanizing playground for artists that breeds collaborations and creative collisions. Since 2009, Shelter artists have created and staged seven seasons of world premieres.
