Obie-Award winning performance group, The Secret City, announces their third annual Winter Solstice celebration, Saturday, December 22nd at 7pm. Special guest performers include Sally Ann Triplett (Sweeney Todd), Elizabeth Marvel (King Lear, House of Cards, Homeland), Leah Coloff (This Tree) and Rhiannon Catalyst (mixed media performance artist). Expect a night of art, music, community, joy and spectacle in the beautiful sanctuary of the historic Judson Memorial Church, in celebration of the darkest night of the year, the 'return' of the light in the night sky and the beginning of winter. Founder Chris Wells will emcee the event.
Each Secret City gathering combines storytelling, art, food, music, meditation, singing, performance and community interaction in an event that is part tent revival, part ceremony, part salon. For their Winter Solstice celebration, there will be white and silver costumes, illuminated lanterns and huge paper flowers by designer Nancy Geaney The colors will be silver and white.
With a guest roster that has included Grammy-award winner Rosanne Cash, Tony winners Michael Cerveris and Stew, Amanda Palmer, performance artist John Fleck, Obie Award-winners Taylor Mac, Justin Vivian Bond and Jennifer Miller, and a slew of downtown stars like Sxip Shirey and Jomama Jones, The Secret City occupies a unique place in the heart of New York's artistic community.
In 2010, The Secret City was awarded a Special Citation Obie Award for service to the creative community.
The Secret City is open to all, suggested donation is $20, but no one is turned away for lack of funds. The Secret City Winter Solstice Celebration will meet at 7pm at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South.
