The Riverside Theatre, located at 91 Claremont Ave in Manhattan, was built inside the historic, interdenominational, interracial, Riverside Church in 1960. The church's long-standing dedication to radical political action and civil rights are as integral to the theatre as they are to the church.
Under new leadership and increased autonomy, TRT is re-committing to their focus on changing the landscape of the NYC theater scene to be more inclusive and representative of diverse populations of our community, dedicated to amplifying essential stories, and providing equitable access to the voices that tell them-because when you change the stage, you change the world.
In 2019, TRT is launching exciting new programming to foster new work, and to provide opportunities for first-time producers and directors to gain experience in a professional setting. The Research and Development Department (R&D @ TRT) will host a summer reading series and start guest company sponsorships. The programs will not only invest in new writers, but will also serve as a training ground for first time producers.
The facility is a 250-seat theater with a traditional proscenium stage located in the heart of Morningside Heights. It has a full inventory of lighting instruments and dimmers, as well as full sound system. The space also has an audio and a light control booth in the back of the house with a full view of the stage, and backstage, two dressing rooms and a green room.
It is truly a hidden gem of a performance venue that rivals most and even outshines downtown and off-broadway performance spaces. TRT is primed and ready to remerge as the uptown epicenter for creating radical change on stage.
TRT is managed by Temishia Johnson: Production Manager/Tehcnical Director; and Lauren Villegas Coordinator/Director of Programming
