Red Bull Theater has announced the January extension of their Jacobean thriller The Revenger's Tragedy, adapted and directed by Red Bull Theater's artistic director Jesse Berger, at the Culture Project (45 Bleecker Street); the show will now be seen in additional performances from January 6th through 22nd, 2006.
Moving to an Off-Broadway contract, Red Bull Theater has cancelled the previous extension performances December 21st-23rd in order to produce these weeks.
"The Revenger's Tragedy is a searing examination of the dichotomy between our social need for justice and the animal desire for vengeance. Vindice, the 'Revenger,' sets off a chain reaction of havoc in a decadent Venice, which exposes outrageous indulgences and government hypocrisy, and ends in a coup de théâter massacre of epic proportions. Part black comedy, part social satire, the play is a gleefully macabre plot-twisting blender full of Shakespeare's greatest hits," state production notes.
Matthew Rauch will lead an ensemble cast as the archetypal revenger, Vindice. Rauch has been seen on Broadway in Proposals and Off-Broadway in Hurlyburly, Book of Days, and others. His many regional credits include stints at the Long Wharf, Arena, Shakespeare Theatre, Hartford Stage, and many more.
Jesse Berger, founder of Red Bull Theater, directed the company's inaugural production of Shakespeare's Pericles in its critically-acclaimed twice-extended Off-Broadway run, and has directed at many major theatres in NYC and elsewhere. Highlights include Marat/Sade (Helen Hayes Award), the Pittsburgh Premiere of The Laramie Project, and All's Well That Ends Well with Michael Learned. He was the 1999 US Directing Fellow at Shakespeare's Globe in London, was Assistant Director of The Shakespeare Theatre-DC for three seasons, and was selected for the 2004-2006 NEA/TCG Program for Directors.
"Red Bull Theater is dedicated to the presentation of vital and imaginative productions of heightened language plays and to the development of new plays written in a similar vein. With a special focus on the Jacobean plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, Red Bull Theater aspires to challenge the intellect and engage the imagination of today's theatergoers through language-based, company-created, resonantly provocative stagings of great classic stories." The schedule runs Monday at 7pm, Wednesday-Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 2pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are now $40 and can be purchased by going to www.theatermania.com. Student Rush Tickets are $20 and available at the box office 1 hour before performances with ID. For more information, visit www.redbulltheater.com.
