The Pearl Theatre Company today announced the directors of the shows comprising its 29th season, the first in its new, permanent home on West 42nd Street.
Having garnered acclaim for staging Ionesco’s The Bald Soprano with “precise, farcical timing” (The New York Times) in The Pearl’s most recent season, Hal Brooks returns this fall to direct this season’s opener, Figaro. In the winter, Davis McCallum, who just directed The Public Theater’s acclaimed production of February House, will direct Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1. In January, James DeVita will bring his one-man show In Acting Shakespeare to The Pearl for a New York premiere (with original direction by John Langs, from its world premiere production at American Players Theatre). In late spring 2013, Jack Cummings III, artistic director of Transport Group, will direct the world premiere of And Away We Go, a new play written expressly for The Pearl by four-time Tony Award-winner Terrence McNally.“We are delighted to announce Hal, Davis, and Jack for The Pearl’s inaugural season on 42nd Street,” said The Pearl’s Artistic Director, J. R. Sullivan. “They bring a wealth of talent and superb craftsmanship to the work of our company. Whether it be the comic edge of Figaro, the epic sweep of family and kingdom in Henry IV, or the travails and triumphs of five theatre companies in the time-traveling And Away We Go, these three directors are just the ones to engineer the grand possibilities of each production.”
