Previously announced plans for a transfer of the Roundabout Theatre Company's recent smash revival of The Pajama Game are no more.
Due to his inability to find an available Broadway theatre with the necessary resources to house the lavish musical, producer Jeffrey Richards announced that The Pajama Game will not arrive at another Broadway theatre this fall. A national tour, though, will launch in the 2007-2008 theatre season (with details to be announced).
The Pajama Game, which opened at the American Airlines Theatre on February 23rd, ran through June 11th in a limited engagement run (although it played five benefit evenings from June 13th through June 17th).
The show won 2006 Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Choreography (for Kathleen Marshall, who also directed). With a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and a book by George Abbott and Richard Bissell, The Pajama Game starred Harry Connick Jr. as Sid, Kelli O'Hara as Babe, Michael McKean as Hines and Megan Lawrence as Gladys, among others.
The cast recording is currently available as part of the "Harry on Broadway, Act 1" CD set, which also includes songs from Connick Jr.'s 2001 Broadway musical Thou Shalt Not.
The Pajama Game is set during union disputes at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, and centers around a love story between two people representing opposing sides of the dispute. The Pajama Game originally opened at the St. James Theatre on May 13th, 1954 to run for 1,063 performances; the show won Tonys for Best Musical, for Bob Fosse's choreography and for Carol Haney as Best Featured Actress in a Musical. It was previously revived in 1973.
