The New York Philharmonic will present An Enchanted Evening with Paulo Szot, a one-night-only performance in which Tony Award winner and Metropolitan Opera artist Paulo Szot and divas from Broadway and television team up in a diverse program of Brazilian, Broadway, and concert songs.
Paulo Szot and the Orchestra will be joined by Broadway and television star Megan Hilty and Broadway star Marin Mazzie for songs and duets by Ibert and Jobim; selections from theatrical hits by Lerner & Loewe, including highlights from My Fair Lady and Camelot; and the evening's title song, "Some Enchanted Evening" from Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific. Ted Sperling will conduct the performance, Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.
"I am thrilled to return to the New York Philharmonic with this very special concert," said Paulo Szot. "We have planned an evening of some of my favorite music from many different genres: from Broadway to Brazilian to classical. I hope you will enjoy this music as much as I know I will enjoy performing it for you."
"At auditions for South Pacific, Paulo read the role of Emile opposite several different actresses auditioning to play Nellie, and I was struck by how beautifully he took care of each lady, making each one of them feel like the most beautiful woman in the world," said Ted Sperling. "This New York Philharmonic program was inspired by Paulo's gallantry, his natural ability to be 'the knight in shining armor.' He introduced me to a beautiful and charming suite of Ibert songs for Don Quixote, and that naturally led us to add songs from Man of La Mancha and Camelot. Megan Hilty and Marin Mazzie will be wonderful partners with Paulo. It will be a varied, fun, and romantic evening!"
Paulo Szot made his New York Philharmonic debut in the April 2009 Spring Gala, performing alongside Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Kelli O'Hara, and others in New York Moments, a concert featuring iconic musical moments from Broadway and film, conducted and hosted by Marvin Hamlisch. Megan Hilty will be returning for the first time since appearing on One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch, the nationally televised New Year's Eve concert on December 31, 2012. Marin Mazzie made her Philharmonic debut in May 2008 as Guenevere in the semi-staged, nationally broadcast production of Camelot, and returned for the March 2010 Spring Gala SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert!, conducted by Paul Gemignani.
