The Mori Art Museum Presents MAM PROJECT 022: JACOB KIRKEGAARD, Now thru 1/4

Mori Art Museum is delighted to present "MAM Project 022: Jacob Kirkegaard" from today, September 20, 2014 through Sunday, January 4, 2015.

Jacob Kirkegaard (born 1975, Denmark) engages the human sense of hearing in works, ranging from sound installations to music composition and performance. By capturing sound and images of places normally off-limits or inaccessible to most people - Icelandic geysers, desert sands, melting icebergs, deserted ruins, and even the human inner ear - Kirkegaard makes the energy of the places tangible, prompting us to recapture the world.

Since 2005, Kirkegaard's work has been shown internationally, primarily in Europe and North America, and his best-known work AION (2006), recorded inside the off-limits area of Chernobyl, presented in numerous exhibitions including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In Japan, his sound and video installation SABULATION (2010), capturing the "singing sands" in the desert of Oman, was featured at the Aichi Triennale 2010.

As a sequel to AION, his new sound and video installation STIGMA (2014), created specially for this show, takes the natural landscape of Fukushima as its theme. Inspired by hanging scroll landscape paintings, Kirkegaard fills a vertical screen some five meters high with scenes of natural settings. Although idyllic, the images, together with sounds, vibrations of the places and our memories of "Fukushima," would shake the perception of nature we embrace.

JACOB KIRKEGAARD

Born 1975 in Denmark. Based in Berlin, Kirkegaard is a graduate of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. His major solo exhibitions include: "Labyrinthitis," CosmoCaixa, Barcelona (2013), "Phantom Bell," Espacio de Arte Contempora?neo, Montevideo, Uruguay (2011) and "Hotel Marienbad 008: Jacob Kirkegaard House of Mare," Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2010). He has also participated in a number of group exhibitions including "ARCTIC," Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (2013-2014), "Soundings: A Contemporary Score," Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013), "Silence," Menil Collection, Texas (2012) and University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, California (2013), Aichi Triennale 2010.
