On May 9 ay 9pm, during the Frieze Art Fair, The Kitchen will present "You are Traffic," a performance created by Boru O'Brien O'Connell and Luke Stettner, featuring Jim Fletcher and Christina Campanella (voice), with sound design by George Monteleone.
"You are Traffic" is a non-linear performative experiment. The 25-minute production investigates the relative proximity between closeness and distance. The staging is minimal and unobtrusive: one actor - a sort of lecturer, complete with a drab outfit and computer for a PowerPoint presentation - appears alone on stage; the other is only made present in the theater through her voice. The two nameless, personae engage in a steady dialogue that, despite being cogent and specific, has no implied narrative, melodramatic or otherwise.
Projected imagery and nuanced sound design converge with, overlap, inform, and appear disjointed along side their conversation. Each of these systems (the discordant but interconnected dialogue, the relative choreography of the sound and images) establishes a different vantage point to explore similar modes of being, seeing, sensing, and feeling. Or, a similar vantage point to explore different modes of doing the same thing.that sounds like an abstruse thing, but it's not. Here is a better way to explain it: Two people can stand in the same spot and see different things; two people can stand in different spots and see the same thing.
