The King's College is proud to present the New York premiere of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams' virtually unknown first musical, A Pound in Your Pocket. Strouse and Adams had just met as two young, aspiring artists when they collaborated on Pound in 1958. The show, adapted from a radio play written for Helen Hayes and based on the Charles Dickens novel The Old Curiosity Shop, had a short-lived albeit critically-acclaimed regional theater run, but soon became eclipsed by the international success of Bye, Bye Birdie. Now, almost six decades later, this history-making work can finally be seen by New York audiences.

The comedic story centers around Dick Swiveller, a congenial, boozy, soon-to-be-heir to a family fortune who takes a job as a law clerk while waiting to come into his inheritance. He befriends the lonely servant girl of his corrupt employers, and the unlikely duo overcome greed, malice, and injustice through a series of misunderstandings, false accusations, and topsy-turvy plot twists. With a score that typifies the finest of Strouse and Adams, and a book rich with strange and delightful Dickensian characters, A Pound in Your Pocket is sure to be considered a newly-discovered classic.

The show is helmed by director Misti B. Wills, with musical direction by Virginia Pike, set design by April Bartlett, lighting design by Dan Henry, costume design by Kayla Redd, technical direction by Evan Hernandez, and stage managed by Shaina Drew. The cast includes Kaleb Batman, Justin Beard, Madison Jordan, Rachel Kyle, Isabelle McCauley, Dorea Slagle, Brittin Ward, Abbey Watt, and Dagmar Wetherill. The team of producers from The King's College are Henry Bleattler (Chair of the Media, Culture and Arts program), Virginia Pike (Lecturer in Music) and Amanda Dash (student). The show is produced in association with student-run theater organization, The King's Players. Performances run for one weekend only, February 19-21, at the Fourth Street Theater located at 83 East 4th Street in Manhattan.
