The King & I Screened with Marni Nixon on Monday, March 14th in NY

A newly restored print of the 1956 Academy Award®-winning film “The King and I” will be screened by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday, March 14. Presented as part of the Academy’s “Monday Nights with Oscar®” series, the film will screen at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.

“The King and I” stars Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr in the screen adaptation of the Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers play, based on the book “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon.

Produced by Charles Brackett, the 1956 Best Picture nominee earned five Academy Awards® from a total of nine nominations. Oscar statuettes were awarded for Actor (Brynner), Art Direction – Color (Lyle R. Wheeler, John DeCuir; Set Decoration Walter M. Scott, Paul S. Fox), Costume Design – Color (Irene Sharaff), Music – Scoring of a Musical Picture (Alfred Newman, Ken Darby) and Sound Recording (20th Century Fox Studio Sound Department, Carl Faulkner, Sound Director).

Additional nominations included Actress (Kerr), Cinematography – Color (Leon Shamroy), Directing (Walter Lang) and Best Picture (Brackett).

Marni Nixon, who provided the vocals for Deborah Kerr in “The King and I,” is scheduled to attend the screening. Nixon is one of Hollywood's most-used “ghost” vocalists. Her voice can be heard in many film classics including “West Side Story,” “My Fair Lady” and “An Affair to Remember.”

Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575. All orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
