This year's festival, curated by Amy Lam, Artistic Programmer of Boston's Celebrity Series, boasts a roster of Joyce favorites and debuts, each performing twice throughout the week. The 2019 American Dance Platform opens with modern meeting postmodern, as the Martha Graham Dance Company and Stephen Petronio Company take the stage in a shared program. Both companies return after multiple Joyce engagements, each performing a classic work from their own repertoire and a recently-crafted piece. The City of Brotherly Love takes over The Joyce as BalletX, Philadelphia's premier contemporary ballet company, performs a classical piece and a Soul Train-inspired work; and shares dates with Philly's own Hip Hop and break dancerRaphael Xavier in his ensemble's Joyce debut. Tradition rounds out this year's platform, with Ephrat Asherie Dance, exploring the jazz dance roots of breaking and hip hop, alongside Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE with Arturo O' Farrill & Resist, bringing work that is heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbean history and traditions.
