The History Boys to Have a West End Run?

The History Boys--which was previously a hit at London's National Theatre before moving to Broadway--will likely have a commerical run in London.

Nicholas Hytner, who won a Tony for directing the popular Alan Bennett play about a group of British prep school boys, said at a press conference today that The History Boys would move to the West End if a suitable theatre becomes available.  The National Theatre would produce The History Boys with National Angels Ltd., a commerical producing branch associated with the National.  No other information was announced.

The History Boys "is the thrilling comedy of eight bright, funny students trying to get into colleges and the year that influenced the rest of their lives.  Guiding them are a maverick English teacher, a headmaster obsessed with results and a strong-willed history teacher resistant to change."  The 2006 Tony Award-winner for Best Play, the show opened at The National Theatre Lyttleton in May of 2004 and played there again after a UK national tour (it is currently on a second UK tour through November).  An upcoming film version reunities most of the original cast, including Tony Award-winner Richard Griffith.  The History Boys ends is successful Broadway run on October 1st.
