The Broadhurst Theatre Box Office (235 West 44th Street) will open on Monday, March 20th at 10am for THE HISTORY BOYS, a new play by Alan Bennett. THE HISTORY BOYS opens Sunday, April 23. Previews begin on Friday, April 14 for a 20-week limited engagement.
THE HISTORY BOYS opened on May 18, 2004 at The National Theatre of Great Britain, where it quickly became a sell-out smash hit. The play, directed by the National's artistic director Nicholas Hytner, won the Evening Standard, Olivier and London Critics' Circle Awards as Best Play. THE HISTORY BOYS is Mr. Bennett's first Broadway play in 30 years, since Habeas Corpus in 1975.
THE HISTORY BOYS is the thrilling comedy of eight bright, funny students trying to get into colleges and the year that influenced the rest of their lives. Guiding them are a maverick English teacher, a headmaster obsessed with results and a strong-willed history teacher resistant to change. A very funny and deeply moving play, THE HISTORY BOYS is about staff-room rivalry, adolescent anarchy and the role of education in our lives.
The complete original National Theatre cast of THE HISTORY BOYS will appear in the Broadway production. The boys will be played by Samuel Anderson (Crowther), Samuel Barnett (Posner), Dominic Cooper (Dakin), James Corden (Timms), Sacha Dhawan (Akthar), Andrew Knott (Lockwood), Jamie Parker (Scripps) and Russell Tovey (Rudge). The teachers will be played by Frances de la Tour (Mrs. Lintott), Richard Griffiths (Hector), Clive Merrison (Headmaster) and Stephen Campbell Moore (Irwin). Other roles will be played by Joseph Attenborough (Company), Tom Attwood (Company/Music Director), Rudi Dharmalingam (Company), Colin Haigh (TV Director) and Pamela Merrick (Make-Up Lady).
THE HISTORY BOYS features scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting by Mark Henderson, sound design by Colin Pink, music by Richard Sisson and video direction by Ben Taylor.
