The Gallery At The Sheen Center For Thought And Culture presents ON A TIPPED CHAIR

The Gallery at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street, NYC) presents "On a Tipped Chair," the debut of Canadian-born artist Jared Boechler's body of fine art and olfactory work.

Marking the first time ever that both Boechler's oil paintings and their companion scents are presented to the public as a collection, the exhibition launches with an opening reception Thursday, February 8 from 6 - 8PM. The Gallery is open daily from 9AM - 11PM, the exhibition is open to the public though February 23.

All paintings on exhibition are available for purchase, with our without their companion scent. Scents are available for purchase with their companion paintings only. Using traditional methods in contemporary context, "On a Tipped Chair" explores the relationship between two-dimensional art and scent and how the combination influences individual perception. Boechler's practice is heavily influenced by scent.

"On a Tipped Chair" encompasses a half-dozen of Boechler's most recent paintings and pairs custom-designed scents alongside the original oil paintings they inspired. The work is the result of an experimental process that allowed the artist to be guided by scent exposure.

The one-of-a-kind scents within the exhibit, composed of rare, premium oils and ingredients, represent direct experiences of the artist and contain smells from memories that have influenced the outcome of the individual works, ranging from notes of lemongrass to burnt rubber, and providing insight into the most personal aspects of Boechler's practice.

"The work within the exhibit confronts the exploration of mental illness and loneliness, emphasizing the importance and perhaps even formative roles these experiences have in our lives," says Boechler. "The exhibit title 'On a Tipped Chair' reflects my personal relationship with anxiety and uses the experience of sitting on an unbalanced chair to draw an unusual comparison.

The body of work explores the process of living and creating on this precipice. This proposes to the viewer a question, one that many artists find themselves having to consider on a daily basis: How do I maintain the balance necessary to productively pursue a craft that is inherently free and unrestricted in nature?" The exhibit has been produced in collaboration with the House of Cherry Bomb Perfumery, based out of Brooklyn, New York, who have exclusively crafted the custom-designed scents that accompany the works.

The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture is a forum to showcase works highlighting the true, the good, and the beautiful. Located downtown on historic Bleecker Street, the Sheen Center is a vibrant new arts organization that focuses on theater, music, film, and talk. A project of the Archdiocese of New York, the state-of-the-art complex encompasses the 270-seat Loreto Theater, equipped with five-camera high-definition TV and live-stream capability and a multi-track recording studio; the 80-seat Black Box Theater; four rehearsal studios; and an art gallery. It was named after the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, best known for his popular, inspirational radio and TV ministry in the 1950s and 60s.
