On June 16, The Ensemblist, the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out, celebrated its first anniversary with a live show at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club. The audio from the live show is now available free to download at theensemblist.com, as well as on iTunes, Stitcher and TuneIn.
Hosts Mo Brady and Nikka Graff Lanzarone invited some of their favorite Broadway performers to the stage to celebrate their ensemblist experiences. Guests Luke Hawkins, Rachel Bay Jones, Jeff Pew and The Skivvies, Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina were interviewed live and gave special performances.
Together, Cearley and Molina are The Skivvies, the award-winning musical duo known for performing stripped down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals. In addition to being accomplished musicians, they are both actors as well: Cearley in All Shook Up, and Molina in Rock of Ages and Sweeney Todd. At the Birdland show, they shared their creation process of The Ensemblist's theme song, and the precise number of bathrooms the track was recorded in.
Jones made her Broadway debut in the Tribe of HAIR before going on to work as a swing in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. However, she is best known for reimaging the role of Catherine in the hit revival of Pippin. On the episode, she sings a haunting version of "Invisible" from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, in which she covered the role played by Patti LuPone.
The duo of Hawkins and Pew have created a classic collaboration of song and dance that is nothing short of charming. In addition to performing frequently at Birdland, they have both graced some of New York City's largest stages: Hawkins in Cirque du Soliel's infamous New York endeavour Banana Shpeel, and Pew in Broadway's Cinderella.
The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you're an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist gives listeners the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.
