The Cornelia Street Café (29 Cornelia St.) hosts an evening tonight of poetry at 6 pm and music at 8:30 pm. Poetry will be hosted by Angelo Verga and features Gretl Claggett, Grace Schulman, and Elaine Sexton. The Bob Stewart Quartet will play their send-off show before Stewart's upcoming tour in the Congo.
Gretl Claggett was born and raised in Hannibal, Missouri, blocks from Mark Twain's boyhood home and the Mississippi River. She has MFA in Theater/Acting, Poetry, and Creative Nonfiction along with a BA in Language and Literature. She has be published in journals such as The Atlanta Review, BigCity Lit, and The Greensboro Review as well as in anthologies "In the Red," "Submerged: Tales from the Basin," and "Chance of a Ghost."
Grace Schulman's new collection of essays is First Loves and Other Adventures. Her latest book of poems is The Broken String. She is the author of six books of poetry, including Days of Wonder: New and Selected Poems and The Paintings of Our Lives. Among her honors are the Aiken Taylor Award for poetry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Fellowship from the New York Council on the Arts. Editor of The Poems of Marianne Moore, she is Distinguished Professor of English at Baruch College, CUNY.
Elaine Sexton is the author of two collections of poems: Causeway and Sleuth. Her poems, art reviews, and essays have appeared in numerous journals including American Poetry Review, Art in America, ARTnews, Poetry, Massachusetts Review, and O, The Oprah Magazine. She teaches a poetry workshop at the Sarah Lawrence College Writing Institute, including a seminar with a special focus on the chapbook.
The Bob Stewart Quartet consist of tuba-player, Bob Stewart, along with his son Curtis Stewart on the violin, Jerome Harris on the guitar, and Matt Wilson on the drums. The show tonight remembers the music of Don Cherry as well as serving as a send-off to Stewart as he travels on a month long tour of the Congo which is sponsored by "Jazz At Lincolon Center's - Rhythm Road."
