Auditions for The King and I

By JeAnnie Wood, Executive Director

The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) announces auditions for its 2011 production, Rodgers and Hammersteins' beloved musical, The King and I, directed by Leslie Ann Rivers, with musical direction by Ken Hardin, and choreography by George Jayne. The King and I will be staged from March 17 to April 16, 2011, at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City. Auditions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and August 29, at St. Joseph's Cultural Center in Grass Valley. Callbacks will be scheduled shortly thereafter, and dates, times, and venue will be advised.

The King and I requires a very large cast of actors, singers, dancers, and children. To reserve a date and time and receive specific audition details, please contact 530-273-6362 or e-mail catsweb@pacbell.net.

The King and I is based on the book, Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon, which is based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who was the school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860's. The musical opened on Broadway in 1951 starring Gertrude Lawrence and Yul Brynner, winning all five Tony Awards in 1952. Hollywood adapted it in 1956, starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner, and Yul Brynner won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Some of the memorable songs include "Getting to Know You," "Shall We Dance" and "Something Wonderful."
