What:

Press preview for The World in Play: Luxury Cards, 1430-1540, an exhibition of more than 100 intricately hand-painted playing cards created for wealthy individuals in the Middle Ages.

Hunting, chivalry, and life at court are referenced on the cards, which originated in southern and southwestern Germany and in the Upper Rhineland. Suits include: falcons, hounds, ducks, and stags; nooses, collars, leashes, and hunting horns; parrots, roses, and pinks (a flower); Bohemia, France, Germany, and Hungary; and others.

When: Tuesday, January 19, 10:00 a.m.-noon (Exhibition dates: January 20-April 17, 2016)

The Cloisters, the branch of the Metropolitan Museum dedicated to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages.
