The Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce Now We Are Six - celebrating the gallery's six years in Chelsea - opening on Wednesday, February 17th from 6 to 8pm. Referencing the A.A. Milne poem of the same name, Now We Are Six is the nexus of the gallery's past, present, and hopes for the future.
Works of the three photographers introduced at the gallery's inaugural show in 2004 - Daniel Bauer, Barry Frydlender, and Leora Leor - will be featured in context with their subsequent successes. Also included are works by all the artists represented by the gallery - Shelley Adler, Lili Almog, Micha Bar-Am, Lillian Birnbaum, Alina and Jeff Bliumis, Jean-Christian Bourcart, Boyan, Rina Castelnuovo, Michal Chelbin, Ofri Cnaani, Itamar Jobani, Vardi Kahana, Amy Simon, Andrea Stern, and Yuval Yairi. Each of the works in the exhibition will be accompanied by wall text to better illustrate the achievements of the artists over the past six years.
The latest addition to the gallery is Amy Simon, whose work was included in the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009). This project, a different STATE of mind, is fully illustrated in a newly published book by Hatje Cantz with essays by Daniel Birnbaum and Amy Baker Sandback.
Looking ahead, we are proud to include in this exhibition the photographic work of Anna Shteynshleyger, a recent recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Shteynshleyger's photographs were the subject of a solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (2010).
When I was One,?
I had just begun.?
When I was Two,
I was nearly new.
When I was Three
I was hardly me.
When I was Four,
I was not much more.
When I was Five,?
I was just alive.?
But now I am Six,?
I'm as clever as clever,?
So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever.
