AMY MARSHALL DANCE COMPANY celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the company, presenting three World Premieres at The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, 405 W. 55th Street, NYC (at Ninth Avenue) from March 25-28, 2010.
The evening begins with English Suite (2005),a classically-based dance full of sweet nuances, set to music by H.H. Parry. In five sections, the piece presents a joyous summer season blooming with the vibrancy of life. The World Premiere of A Gift features artistic director Amy Marshall dancing seven months pregnant with her third child, a daughter, expressing the purity and simplicity of the experience of growing a new life. In the World Premiere of Riding the Purple Twilight, audiences are swept on a dark, sensuous journey of a young couple racing full throttle towards fame and success, stopping at nothing to get ahead. Askew (2000) explores the dynamics of group relationships in social situations as six dancers split into two groups confronting one another as each vies to proves his loyalty and honor. Throughout the dance people shift from one side to the other, or one against all or two against each other, which so often occurs in everyday life. The first piece choreographed by Amy Marshall, Excerpt from Two Duets and a Quartet (2000), set to Bach Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in A minor is a poignant tribute to lifelong love, as the duet reveals a couple's ease, patience and peace with one another. The World Premiere of Going for the Gold is comic relief in four sections, taking audiences on the rigorous journey to an Olympic medal. The program is appropriate for children ages five and above.

The Amy Marshall Dance Company was formed in February 2000. Designed to showcase Amy Marshall's strong and provocative choreography, the company today is a ten member ensemble of exceptionally talented dancers whose skill and technical perfection devour the stage space with artistic grandeur. The repertory created by Ms. Marshall fills the audience with excitement, interweaving classical dance with a contemporary edginess that paves the way for the future of modern dance. Throughout her fifteen years of teaching, Ms. Marshall has found an increasing need for awareness in arts education. To answer this need she has constructed an educational outreach program for people of all ages and artistic levels to experience the joy and exuberance of dance. This outreach program has become a popular component for an AMDC residency. The Amy Marshall Dance Company performs unique and exciting works of art performed by extraordinary dancers who invite the audience to experience their joy. AMDC is dance at its finest.
Amy Marshall spent her early performing career based in New York City and dancing around the world with the companies of
Paul Taylor and
David Parsons, H. T. Chen and Dancers, Cortez and Company and many more. Born in Kyoto, Japan, she possesses an innate curiosity and passion for cultural history. The essence of her art is dance as metaphor for life's experiences. After a decade of performing professionally, Ms. Marshall established the Amy Marshall Dance Company in 2000. Her motivation to test the physical boundaries of dance through her work established the unique character of her choreography. Trained at Goucher College with a double major in Dance and Theater, Ms. Marshall has become a renowned choreographer in her own right. Her repertoire has been set on professional companies and universities across the nation. In addition, Ms. Marshall serves as a mentor to dancers and choreographers through her work on numerous panels including American College Dance Festival, North Carolina School of the Arts "Arts Exchange", and South Carolina Dance Association. She is also an Associate Professor of Dance of Hofstra University. Ms. Marshall sees dance as both the embodiment of life's complexity and the pure elation it imparts to the world.
