The Theatre Museum has announced the honorees for the 2013 Theatre Museum Awards for Excellence. The mission of TheTheatre Museum is to preserve, protect, and perpetuate the legacy of the theatre,it is the first and only chartered non profit museum dedicated to the historyof Theatre. Since 1995 The Awards for Excellence have recognized individualsand organizations for their contribution to theater arts, education, theaterhistory and preservation. The 2013 Theatre Museum Awards will take place on Monday, June 3rd at 6PM at The Players Club 16 Gramercy Park, NYC.
This year The Theatre Museum honors Helen Marie Guditis, posthumously, with the Distinguished Service to the Theatre Award. The award will be presented by Stewart F. Lane,Chairman of The Theatre Museum. In 1986 Helen Marie Guditis founded the"Broadway Theatre Institute", in 2007 the name was changed to "The Theatre Museum". Ms Guditis dedicated her life to theater education and preservation. Ms Guditis was President of The Theatre Museum until she died of cancer in 2012.
The Theatre Museum Advisory Board member, Bonnie Comley, willpresent The Award for Excellence in Theatre Arts Education to Emerson College.Established in 1880, Emerson College is a diverse, coeducational, and multifaceteddegree-granting institution with campuses in Boston,Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Its mission is"to explore and push the boundaries of communication, art, and cultureand, thereby, to contribute to the advancement of society." Emerson Collegestudents study with professional artists in the theaters and performancesspaces that include the newly renovated 600 seat Paramount Centerand the 1200 seat Cutler Majestic Theater. EmersonCollege owns more theater andperforming space than any other institution in Boston and all spaces are available for theirstudents' education.
Because the year 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of ThePalace Theater on Broadway in addition to the awards, the event will present aTribute to The Palace Theater. The tribute will feature appearances by Trav S.D., Todd Robbins, Ariela Pizza, Joe Franklin, Leah Lane, Rod Kimball &Company, Chris McDaniel, and Jim Dale. Avideo tribute to vaudeville actors who performed at The Palace Theater will beprovided by Ron Hutchinson and The Vitaphone Project. The 2013 TTM Awards areproduced by Alyssa Renzi and Trav S. D.
The Theatre Museum currently functionsas a museum-at-large with administrative offices at 40 Worth Street NYC until a permanent gallery is located.
