Broadway's razzle-dazzle hit musical Chicago is pleased to welcome back Terra C. MacLeod as Velma Kelly for two weeks only at Broadway's Ambassador Theatre (219 West 49th Street). MacLeod will appear from Thursday, February 21 through Thursday, March 6, while Brenda Braxton is on vacation.
MacLeod has a long history with Velma Kelly, having starred
in the French world premieres of Chicago in Montreal
(2003) and Paris
(2004), in addition to prior engagements with the Broadway production and the
national and international touring productions.
MacLeod's other recent stage credits include Gladys in The Pajama Game at Musical Theatre West (Los Angeles) and Adelaide in Guys and Dolls at the San Diego Musical Theatre. She is the recipient of the Jessie Richardson Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in the Vancouver Arts Club production of West Side Story. Her various television and film credits include The Lizzie Maguire Movie, The Reagans, "The Dead Zone," "Jeremiah," "Cold Squad" and "Life or Something Like It."
Brenda Braxton returns to Chicago on Friday, March 7. As previously announced, Grammy Award-winning recording artist Mýa will assume the role of Velma Kelly on Monday, May 12 for a nine-week summer engagement through Sunday, July 13.
Now celebrating eleven glorious years of girls, guns, glitz and glamour on the Great White Way, the record-breaking smash hit musical Chicago is currently the eighth longest-running production in Broadway history, as well as Broadway's longest-running musical revival…and it still shows no sign of ever slowing down!
"Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids," describe press notes.
With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking, Chicago features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. Visit www.ChicagoTheMusical.com for more information.
