Tenor Paul Appleby Performs At Alice Tully Hall 11/30

Tenor Paul Appleby is joined by pianist Brian Zeger for a solo recital as the winner of Juilliard's 14th annual Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Award on November 30 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall (Broadway at 65th Street). The program features Schubert's song cycle, 'Die schöne Müllerin', on poems by Wilhelm Müller.

Mr. Appleby is in his second year of the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program where this season he will sing the role of Jenik in the Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School's joint production of THE BARTERED BRIDE conducted by James Levine. He later makes his Metropolitan opera debut in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS conducted by Fabio Luisi (May 7, 10, and 13). A recipient of an Artist Diploma in Opera Studies at Juilliard, he recently performed the roles of the Chevalier de la Force in Poulenc's DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES conducted by Anne Manson and Martin in Copland's THE TENDER LAND conducted by David Effron.

Other upcoming appearances for Mr. Appleby include ZAIDE at Carnegie Hall with Ensemble ACJW, led by David Robertson; a program of Schubert and Haydn with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Zehetmair (June 9, 10, and 11); and Beethoven's 'Christus am Ölberge' with Kent Tritle on the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space series at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, New York (May 25).

Mr. Appleby's other recent performances include the role of Fenton in FALSTAFF with the Juilliard Opera conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, Agenore in IL RE PASTORE with Opera Theatre of St. Louis led by conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni, and Gomatz in ZAIDE conducted by Gary Thor Wedow, and Lysander in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM conducted by Steve Osgood, both at Wolf Trap Opera. On the concert stage, Mr. Appleby made his European debut in a performance of Haydn's 'Die Schöpfung' at the Wolfegg Festival conducted by Manfred Honeck and a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion conducted by James Conlon at the May Festival.

As a recitalist, Mr. Appleby performs extensively with pianist Steven Blier and the New York Festival of Song and recently performed the world premiere of 'Beautiful Ohio', a song cycle written for the artist by Pulitzer nominee, Harold Meltzer. He has performed recitals for the Marilyn Horne Foundation, the Judith Raskin memorial concert, and the Joy in Singing Foundation. Mr. Appleby, a native of South Bend, Indiana and now a resident of New York City, received a master of music degree from Juilliard and a bachelor's degree in English literature and music from the University of Notre Dame.

Pianist and Artistic Director of Juilliard's Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts, Brian Zeger, has built an important career not only as a pianist, appearing in distinguished concert venues throughout the United States and Europe, but also as an ensemble performer, radio broadcaster, artistic administrator and educator. In a career spanning more than two decades, Mr. Zeger has enjoyed collaborations with many of the world's top artists, including Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle, Arleen Auger, René Pape, Deborah Voigt, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Susan Graham, Denyce Graves, Bryn Terfel, Thomas Hampson, Adrianne Pieczonka, Hei-Kyung Hong, Juliane Banse, and Joyce DiDonato. Recent and upcoming engagements include recitals with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Adrianne Pieczonka, and René Pape. He is director of the vocal program at the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival and has recently taken on the role of Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists Development Program.
