It has been announced that Tamara Tunie will direct JAZZLAND: in Concert, a new musical inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, set in Depression-era Harlem at the height of the Harlem Renaissance.
JAZZLAND: in Concert is presented by the Harlem School of the Arts/Theater Department under the supervision of Artistic Director, Alfred Preisser and in partnership with Manhattan School of Music and Harlem Stage. The student members of HSA's highly celebrated Dorothy Maynor Singers, (16 voices and counting), comprise much of the cast, with vocal direction provided by HSA's Music Director, Ms. Yolanda Wyns. Dance Director, Aubrey Lynch is in charge of original choreography featuring the HSA Dance Ensemble and Junior Ensemble.
Other members of HSA's in-house creative team will loan their talents to the production, as will members of Manhattan School of Music, such as Matt Holman, who is the project's Band Director.
Ms. Tunie shares co-writing credit with Scott Crockett and Charles Leipart who is also contributing lyrics for the original music composed by Eric Reed, with orchestrations and arrangements by Sean Powell.
Audiences are familiar with Ms. Tunie's acting career, which spans across film, television and the theater. Add to that film and theatre director, as well as Broadway producer of such TONY Award winners as, August Wilson's Radio Golf and the musical, SpringAwakening.
"The level of excellence and talent that these young performers bring is extraordinary," says Ms. Tunie. "And I am honored to be working with a dream team of passionate individuals who bring years of experience to this project."
