After years of writing and rewriting and over a year of allowing the man to inhabit his mind and body seven times a week, there's no doubt that Hamilton's author/star Lin-Manuel Miranda must feel a special attachment to the revolutionary figure who is the subject of his smash hit musical.
But you don't have to be a Broadway genius to recognize the beauty and sincerity of the final love letter Alexander Hamilton wrote to his beloved wife Elizabeth, meant to be delivered to her only if he was killed in his upcoming duel.
In his musical, Miranda presents the country's first Secretary of The Treasury as a man whose major strength was in the power of his writing. As you can see from this historic document preserved by Columbia University, and the transcription provided below, his pen could also express great tenderness.
So @Columbia pulled out Hamilton's last letter to Eliza for me.
