While musical theatre has occasionally taken inspiration from the sporting world, with varying degrees of success (DAMN YANKEES, ROCKY), you'll rarely find showtunes on the set list of your local stadium or arena.
There have been exceptions. Many soccer teams in Europe have claimed Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone" as their inspirational anthem; not for any affinity for the musical CAROUSEL, but because the Liverpool band Gerry and The Pacemakers had a hit single with the song in 1963.
Decades later, in Los Angeles, Dodger Stadium organist Nancy Bea Hefley regularly played LES MISERABLES' "Master of The House" when pitcher Orel Hershiser took the mound, noting the pitcher's nearly unbeatable record at home games.
Will the New York Knicks start adding selections from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to their playlist? Basketball's history of being an urban city game sure seems like a great match for the revolutionary new hip-hop musical.
The Grammy-winning MacArthur genius grant recipient had a prime courtside seat at Madison Square Garden last night. And though the home team fell to the visiting Toronto Rapters, the evening wasn't a total loss as he got to see Hamilton's recent Grammy Award segment played on the arena's Jumbotron.
Who knows... Maybe soon, with the game on the line in the final seconds, fans may start hearing the speakers blaring out, "I am not throwing away my shot!"
