For Broadway theatre-goers who have been enjoying her versatile knack for comedy and drama matched with soaring vocals in shows like RENT, AIDA, WICKED and IF/THEN, it must seem rather amazing that there are millions of young girls, most of whom may not even know her face, that only know Idina Menzel from her cherished performance of "Let It Go" from Disney's animated adventure, FROZEN.
But Idina Menzel has been a hero to young girls in real life, long before FROZEN. In 2010, she and Taye Diggs founded A BroaderWay (ABW), a non-profit organization dedicated to offering girls from urban communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity through arts-centered programs. Their emphasis is on building self-esteem, developing leadership qualities and striving for personal and social achievement.
Recent fundraising events for A BroaderWay include last night's 4th Annual Karaoke Benefit held at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, and a FROZEN sing-along featuring the film score's Academy Award winning songwriters Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Enjoy clips and photos from the events along with a video showing the important work accomplished by A BroaderWay. Visit abroaderway.org.
