While women in theatre are rightfully fighting for greater representation on stage and in creative positions, the public at large is certainly more aware of inequities in the film industry.

While it's no secret that serious leading roles for women are at a premium, viewers are less likely to be aware of the flagrantly sexist and objectifying ways female characters are described by writers submitting screenplays.

In less than 48 hours, film producer Ross Putman's new Twitter account, @FemScriptIntros, has accumulated over 40,000 followers. His posts contain descriptions of female characters found in the thousands of screenplays he's read, although no films or writers are identified and he refers to each character as "Jane."

Putman's most recent film, FIRST GIRL I LOVED, about a teenage girl understanding her sexuality, premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

At least one Broadway star has tweeted her approval, and surely more will follow.
