FIREWATER
Firewater began in the summer of 1997 in a Brooklyn basement after leader Tod A denied a major label deal and decided to birth a “world punk” band. Their distinct music has come from a unique meshing of cultures, such as the mixing the sounds of ska, jazz, folk, gypsy and klezmer music.
Firewater can be described as a musical collective with an ever-changing line-up. With the exception of constant singer-songwriter and bassist/guitarist Tod A, the band has had members such as Ori Kaplan of Gogol Bordello and Tamir Muskat who have added touches of their own flavor over the span of the bands’ six studio albums. In 2004 Firewater recorded their album, Songs We Should Have Written, which is a collection of covers that they gave their own unique spin, such as The Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black” giving it a slower tempo compared to the original. After recording this album Tod A took a three-year sabbatical traveling the world to gather a new mesh of musical genres. During this time, he wrote and recorded the band’s sixth studio album The Golden Hour.
Since their start in 1997 they have built up a following not only in their hometown, but their success has expanded the lengths of Europe. Closely fitting into the gypsy punk genre, Firewater has so much more to bring to the table. Their sound is unique and always exciting for fans of all musical genres. This is a band that combines elements of cultures and genres that fans would have never thought possible in a way that leaves listeners wanting more.
