BROADWAY BACKWARDS 7 played Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre earlier this week. The show featured some of Broadway’s biggest names singing songs originally written for the opposite gender: women singing songs written for men and men singing songs written for women. The Public Theater hosted the Public Sings! benefit on March 5. The evening featured David Byrne, Alan Cumming, Montego Glover, Gabriel Kahane, Ethan Lipton, Kelli O’Hara, Jesse L. Martin, Benjamin Walker, Jessica Phillips and more at Joe's Pub. The evening was directed by Daisy Prince with musical direction by Chris Fenwick and celebrated the rich history of musicals produced by The Public Theater, including HAIR; A Chorus Line; Caroline, or Change; and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The world-famous Rockettes and Knicks City Dancers along with Broadway stars Tony Vincent (American Idiot, NBC’s “The Voice”), Christina Sajous (Spiderman), Derrick Baskin (Memphis) and Justin Johnson (Rent) are serving as this year's guest artists mentoring for nearly 100 children partaking in the Garden of Dreams Talent Show. The Garden of Dreams Talent Show is an annual event where children from various Garden of Dreams partner organizations, all facing various issues are presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the Great Stage at Radio City Music Hall. Tony Award-winning director John Doyle, who has previously staged Broadway revivals of Stephen Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD and COMPANY directs the composer-lyricist's musical MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park which runs through March 31. This year's Broadway Beauty Pageant will take place on Monday evening, March 19th, at 8p.m. at Symphony Space. The popular event is the annual benefit of New York's Ali Forney Center. Participants include Andrew Chappelle (Mamma Mia!), Wilkie Ferguson III (Porgy and Bess), Corey Mach (Godspell), Jesse Swimm (Mary Poppins), and Anthony Wayne (Priscilla Queen of the Desert). Paper Mill Playhouse just began previews for Damn Yankees, directed by Paper Mill Playhouse's Producing Artistic Director, Mark S. Hoebee, with choreography by Denis Jones. The cast features Howard McGillin (Applegate), Chryssie Whitehead (Lola), Christopher Charles Wood (Joe Hardy), Joseph Kolinski (Joe Boyd), Patti Cohenour (Meg Boyd) and Nancy Anderson (Gloria Thorpe). The Broadway production of LEAP OF FAITH begins previews on Tuesday, April 3 and will open on April 26 at the St. James Theatre. LEAP OF FAITH stars four-time Tony nominee Raúl Esparza and features Jessica Phillips, Kendra Kassebaum, Kecia Lewis-Evans, Leslie Odom, Jr., Krystal Joy Brown and Talon Ackerman. When his traveling ministry breaks down in a small Kansas town, part-time reverend and full-time con artist Jonas Nightingale (Esparza) quickly pitches a tent and invites the locals to a revival. Peter and the Starcatcher, a new play by Tony® Award-nominee Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), directed by Tony® Award-winner Roger Rees (Nicholas Nickleby) and Tony® Award-nominee Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Pee-Wee Herman Show), has an official opening night set for Sunday, April 15, 2012 at The Brooks Atkinson Theatre. In the new play, a company of twelve actors plays more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up?

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, directed by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s Artistic Director and 2-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR opens March 22, 2012 (previews began March 1) at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street). The cast features Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ, Josh Young as Judas Iscariot, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Tom Hewitt as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas and Aaron Walpole as Annas.
