Monday night, Roundabout Theatre Company presented its annual 2015 Spring Gala "There is Nothing Like a Dame" in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria. The evening was a celebration of Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner Helen Mirren, who was presented with The Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre. The tribute featured appearances by Jennifer Garner & Alessandro Nivola and performances by Laura Benanti,Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Santino Fontana, Victor Garber, Donna Murphy, Kelli O'Hara,Alessandro Nivola,Laura Osnes and Betsy Wolfe. Wednesday, we got a first look at Award-winning Canadian actress Chilina Kennedy, who will take over as the title role in BRAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL beginning March 7. Wednesday was also opening night for Rasta Thomas' ROMEO AND JUNIET in the West End. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Jay Z, LMFAO, The Police, David Guetta (as well as Vivaldi and Prokofiev) provide the hit tunes as the greatest love story of all time bursts into the 21st century in a phenomenal adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Friday we got a first look at THE COLORED MUSEUM, which presents 11 hilarious "exhibits" of African-American culture. Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe's groundbreaking comedy, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Billy Porter, has electrified, discomforted, and delighted audiences of all colors, skewering stereotypes and redefining what it means to be black in contemporary America.
