According to The Hollywood Reporter, THE WIZ LIVE! producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will re-team with the live musical's choreographer Fatima Robinson on a semi-autobiographical dance drama about her life and career.
Set in Los Angeles in the 1990's the currently untitled project, now in its early stages of development, will be inspired by Robinson's life as a dancer-turned-choreographer, and will focus on the period in which "dance begins to dominate pop culture on the streets and clubs that gave birth to hip-hop dance."
Zadan explained to THR, "We worked with her on the Oscars and knew she was special. We hired Fatima Robinson, who is not a Broadway choreographer, to do authentic black dancing. She comes from hip-hop and a lot of her point of view on dance is very gritty and authentic and raw."
Zadan and Meron will executive produce. Robinson will executive produce and serve as choreographer. A writer has not yet been announced.Robinson is among the producers for NBC's THE VOICE. Her choreography credits include the films Dreamgirls, Ali, Collateral, Miami Vice and Public Enemies. Her work has also been seen on Oscar telecasts, the Super Bowl, Grammys and in music videos for such artists as Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Black-Eyed Peas, Sade and Brittany Spears.
