A rape survivor is looking for attention. You could even say she's asking for it. The Kind Of Thing You Don't Talk About is a new show celebrating survival playing at The Performing Garage in Soho. Asia Gagnon, will be presenting this multi-media collaboration with designer, Max Bernstein, at 8:00pm on September 22nd.

A hybrid between performance art piece and comedic storytelling, The Kind Of Thing You Don't Talk About attempts to shape a new perception of survivors of sexual assault through live video and sound manipulation, mythological recreations, and personal anecdotes.

If you don't work at a counseling center, the chances of hearing people openly discuss their experiences with sexual assault are slim. Yet, statistics tell us that 1 in 3 women will experience sexual assault in their lifetime.

The only thing we hear discussed openly is the scandal of rape. The news report. The online article. Pictures of women with bruised faces and descriptions of their unconscious bodies found with underwear around their knees. What women would want to be associated with such victimizing images? How could they be seen as figures of strength if they reveal themselves to be part of this narrative?"

Asia Gagnon has written a new narrative; one that reflects the awesome resilience that lives within the hearts of assault survivors. Using green screens, projectors, repurposed texts, and some unexpected props, Gagnon has found a way to share her own personal story creating a space, which evokes respect rather than pity. The 60-minute show gives an honest, yet comedic glimpse into the triumph of survival, and the power that stories hold.

Asia Gagnon received her BFA in Directing at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama. She has interned and worked with companies including Mabou Mines, Elevator Repair Service and (most recently) The Wooster Group. Recent directing credits in New York include the season two premiere of Blank My Life (webseries), an original 10 minute play Heat Of The Moment (Tiny Rhino), Chinashop Meet Bulls by playwright Michael Perrie Jr (Standard Toykraft), and the staging of her original play Bright Things (Manhattan Repertory Theatre)

Max Bernstein was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, where he received his BA in Media Studies from UB. Bernstein also received an MFA in film from UC Boulder. He is a media designer for Kaki King, a media designer for Michelle Ellsworth, an associate of The Wooster Group, a member of The Flinching Eye Collective, a member of Friends Of The TANK, and drummer and video designer in the band Eupana.

Tickets are available online via The Performing Garage website. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Planned Parenthood. http://theperforminggarage.org/events/asia-gagnon/
