Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Julia Udine, who is starring as 'Christine' in The Phantom of the Opera- currently playing at the Majestic Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
My first show was Beauty and the Beast. I was about 5 years old, and I knew most of the songs from the movie. I remember a woman sitting in front of us asked my mother if I could stop singing...
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
Hmmm, I'm not sure how unique it is, but I like to listen to justin timberlake or beyonce while I do a short ballet barre in my dressing room to get warmed up.
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
It was in Providence during the first week of the US tour of Phantom, when the audience got a little spooked by the lingering odor from the pyro that was used in the show. I'm not exactly sure how it happened but in the middle of managers 2 scene right before I sing 'twisted every way' (a pretty emotional spot in the show for Christine), I heard rumbling from the audience, then I heard all the chairs snapping back up because people were exiting the theater! It was pretty scary and I sort of kept singing for a while until my fellow castmates looked at me and said "Julia! stop singing" Then the house lights were brought up, the orchestra stopped playing and the curtain closed. Long story short, after we got clearance from the fire department, the show resumed in the same exact place we left off.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
'Maria' in West Side Story.
Who is your Broadway crush?
Ok my girl crush is Audra McDonald, and my guy crush is Ramin Karimloo. Those voices....GAHH. I haven't met either of them....so now I feel kind of creepy.
Where can people find you online?
