Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Patrice Covington, who stars as 'Squeak' in The Color Purple, playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
My first NYC Broadway experience was Aida with Heather Headley. I was so enamored with the beauty of both her and the show. And the fact that there was a beautiful black woman as the leading lady definitely opened my heart and mind to the possibility of pursuing the dream of Broadway. I also love that my very good friend and current cast mate Grasan Kingsberry was in the production. We didn't know each other then and little did we know he'd make is 10th Broadway appearance and the only TCP original cast member in the same show that I'd make my Broadway debut in.
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
I'll be honest. I rarely warm up. It's bad. I kinda just wake up and sing. But I always pray and have a moment to myself and thank God for the opportunity to step on stage once more before I step on the stage.
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
When I was doing the National Tour of Ain't Misbehavin with Ruben Studdard we made a stop in Lexington, Kentucky. The theater was old and much like a barn. I was in the middle of a solo performance and real life bat flew across my face and all of us ducked and screamed and ran around the stage.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
I would love to perform the lead role in a show that isn't written yet..."The Patti LaBelle Story". She is one of my music idols and I used to lie and tell my friends I was named after her when I was a little girl.
Who is your Broadway crush?
Norm Lewis. FINE. As. Wine. That's all.
