Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Russell Harvard, who stars as 'the Adult Men' in Spring Awakening, currently playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
Cats on tour in Austin, TX. I was 13 during the time and I was mesmerized.
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
I drink a cup of water mixed with Emerg-C along with four capsules of Echinacea and a venti iced green tea to stay hydrated throughout the show.
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
When I worked on Tribes, during every show, I had to eat a bowl of pasta with cherry tomatoes. I don't recommend eating real food during the show.
To start the show, the five family members, including me, came to the center of the stage while the audience was seated around us. As the lights dim and the music crescendos, we bring our wine glasses and bowls to the dinner table. Then the light immediately comes on, and my family starts talking very fast, and I'm eating my food watching them as everyone's conversations are overlapping.
One day there were ants crawling in my bowl during the matinee show - so I didn't eat anything. The evening show came and there were ants in my bowl. Again. I decided to be bold and eat what I could and leave the ants alone. The next day was another matinee show. Mare Winningham, who played my mom, had a moment where she left her chair to go to me and looked directly into the bowl, and then at me - and she gave me a look of relief! She mouthed, "No ants!"
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
Frank N Further.
Who is your Broadway crush?
Apart from Trekkie Monster from Avenue Q... it would be Hugh Jackman.
