Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Andy Mientus, who is starring as 'Marius' in Les Miserables- currently playing at the Imperial Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR in 2000, RENT the same weekend. Broadway rocked back then!
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
I've never thought of myself as handsome, at least not traditionally so, so whenever I have to play a character who is handsome and confident, I try to find a face that looks like the character looks in my mind's eye- usually another actor or a model in a magazine. Then, I visualize that face and try to see out of those eyes and suddenly I feel transformed. I check in with that exercise before every entrance I make. Reading that back, it sounds really sad but I promise I love myself. But do I look fat in this?
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
I've been lucky enough to not have any huge catastrophes occur onstage yet because usually the shows I do have a few chairs as the set, but my life is generally one big "the show must go on" moment. At the University of Michigan, they tell you that the secret to life is the graceful execution of plan B.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
I'm more likely to age out of this one than die first (I hope, eek) but I am aching to play 'Evan' in Annie Baker's play THE ALIENS. I was that kid growing up and there is still a lot of him left in me (see answer 2) but he's 17 so while I think I could still pull it off on stage, those days are numbered, sadly!
Who is your Broadway crush?
I'm dating him.
Where can people stalk you online?
I'm on Twitter and Instagram @andymientus and have a public Facebook page under my name. They are THE go-to place for Caroline, or Change references and Pokemon trivia.
