Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Joseph Leo Bwarie, who stars as 'Frankie Valli' in Jersey Boys, currently playing at the August Wilson Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
I am from the 818 area code in Southern California. Growing up, I was lucky enough to see incredible theatre all over the Los Angeles area. It wasn't until the year 2000 that I saw my first Broadway show - THE MUSIC MAN with Craig Bierko and Rebecca Luker - and it was awesome.
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
I wouldn't call it so much a pre-show ritual, but I do like to pop into all the dressing rooms and see everyone as themselves before I see them as their characters.
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
I was delivering a direct address in Act 2. A woman from the balcony suddenly yells "Stop! Stop the show! He's not breathing." I pause. BEAT. She then shouts, "Never mind... he was sleeping." I was relieved he was alive, but was troubled that he was asleep. I proceeded to continue.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
The role I want to play is the one I originate. So, who knows what that will be? But I know I am going to like creating it.
Who is your Broadway crush?
Kelli O'Hara. I think 'Anna' and 'Frankie' should grab a coffee and discuss Siam and Jersey; and that many moons ago I sang "Getting To Know You" in "The Addams Family" movie. Kelli sings it much better.
